What is Autism? (by Autism Speaks)

Autism is a general term used to describe a group of complex developmental brain disorders known as Pervasive Developmental Disorders (PDD). The other pervasive developmental disorders are PDD-NOS (Pervasive Developmental Disorder – Not
Otherwise Specified), Asperger’s Syndrome, Rett Syndrome and Childhood Disintegrative Disorder. Many parents and professionals refer to this group as Autism Spectrum Disorders.

Signs of Autism

Because autism is classified as a spectrum disorder, the range of autism symptoms can vary from mild to severe and can appear in any manner of combinations.  As the symptoms of autism vary, so do the routes to obtaining a diagnosis.

You know your child the best.  If you are having some concerns about developmental milestones bring these up to your child’s pediatrician or seek a second opinion from a developmental pedetrican.
